Greetings

This is only the second time I have ever tried to blog. The first time was on MySpace nearly four years ago, just about the time that MySpace started to get very sketch (colloquialism for shady or untrustworthy for those not up on the verbiage used by today's teenagers) and I closed my account. In any case, my posts were random, not thought provoking, and usually inconsistent. I will attempt to do better with this and I hope that it is at least edifying to the one or two readers that stumble upon my often incoherent ramblings.

This blog will not be "personal" in that it will not serve as a primary updating tool for what is going on the lives of Christi and me. It will be "personal" in that it will share some experiences as I try to live the life to which God has called me. In doing so, I hope that, like Paul, I can be personal when I need to be and professional when the circumstance asks me to be. Much of what I write will be thoughts and questions that are raised from my time spent in the Word of God and how it relates to life in this world today.

That being said, I want to explain why I named this blog "Un-Devoured". This stems from my favorite verse in all of Scripture 1 Peter 5.8, which says: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (ESV). Peter sees the evil lurking around every corner that can trap anyone who is not ready. This verse screams loud and clear the need to monitor our lives as Christians and remove ALL forms of temptation. Peter does not say, "Hey guys, live a good life and a few sins here and there will be okay." Instead he screams the warning that what you and I might see as a "gray-area" in life could be the very snare that leads to your demise.

One of my favorite movies is "The Ghost and the Darkness", which is not a spooky ghost movie at all. Instead, it is a movie about lions in Africa that lurk in the dark of night, hunting human victims to drag off and devour. See, lions are well disguised animals. I know you are thinking, Evan, seriously, well disguised? If you can't spot a lion, you're an idiot. Well, look at a lion and look at Africa. The grass and weeds are usually dry, which means they are tall and golden, the same color as a lion which hides itself in the surroundings. It sneaks up on a herd of zebras or antelopes, lurking in the weeds and springs when least expected by its victim. In the movie, the lions do the same thing, but they are downing men rather than wild game. Do you see the parallel that Peter makes for us? Satan lurks in the shadows, hiding in the areas where we work and play, allowing us to be comfortable in life. Then, out of no where, he springs upon us and sinks his teeth into our souls before we can react.

I named this blog "Un-Devoured" because I believe that is the aim of the Christian life. It is not to arrogantly suggest that I am not a devoured person, because Satan knows my weaknesses and where he can take me down. Rather, it is to be a beacon for myself and my fellow believers to follow Peter's directive and watch for the dangers around us that Satan can and will use to ruin our lives, our witness, and our fellowship with God if we let him.

May we all live lives that are un-devoured.

Hey! I want to hear from you. Let's bridge dialogue as followers of Christ and not followers of the world. I am eager to see how we can grow together!
