Glory to God Alone

This past Sunday was a monumental day in the life of First Baptist Church of Fairburn. I want to share with you that because our church dedicated itself to prayer and seeking the face of God in the past few weeks concerning how He would have us give, our church brought an offering that far exceeded any single week offering in the past 7 years. I believe that God impressed upon us our need and responsibility to give. And we did!

Psalm 115:1 says, “Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory because of your faithful love, because of Your truth.” This is the vibrant praise of David in response to the work of God Almighty in Israel. God, who reveals Himself to His people, who provides peace and security for those who fear Him, and abounds in steadfast love, is the One Who alone is worthy to receive glory.
That is our prayer and our cry today. It is reason to celebrate His majesty and His worth. It is our prerogative to deflect all of the accolades and each “attaboy” to the Father. And it is for us to take this on even NOW! Please do not misunderstand, as great as Sunday was, it is not for us to claim as our victory or our job well done. It is the glory of God at work in us. It is for us to pass the praise to Him for His work in us…all we had to do is obey! What we do now is continue to walk in obedience. That starts with serious prayer and asking God if this was a one time step of obedience or would He have us continue to give in this manner above and beyond our normal giving. In other words, is God calling you to a new normal?
This praise that David offers in Psalm 115 also carries us into this coming Sunday. As you are aware, we will have a Homecoming celebration this Sunday as we worship God together. It will be a time that we consider the history of our church, have a meal, and look to the future. This could easily be a time that we, like Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 5, look at the landscape to revel in all that we have done. Instead, let’s approach Sunday with the perspective of amazement of what God has already done and what God is going to continue to do. FBC Fairburn is here by the glory of God and for the glory of God…we just have the fortune of being part of His work.

Join me Sunday as we celebrate God. Gather your friends, family, and neighbors around the area to come and celebrate His work. Marvel with me at His glory and wonder. Stand amazed at the work of the Cross in our lives, our church, and our community. And be prepared to watch God work around us as we embrace the future with joyous expectation. See you all on Sunday!
