April 21 - He Is Not Here

Christ is Risen

Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
We fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to Him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely You've bled for us

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but Heaven's will
No scheme of Hell, no scoffer's crown
No burden great can hold You down
In strength You reign
Forever let Your church proclaim
(Bridge)
O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light
The glory of God has defeated the night

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

He Is Not Here
Luke 24.1-12

This is the moment that all creation has waited to see. Sure, we look at it in hindsight, but from creation to the Cross, this is the point of greatest anticipation. The echoes of this moment have resounded through history as God promised redemption and the Redeemer for generations before Christ came.

We like to say in the Church that Jesus was born to die. While it is true that throughout the Gospels Jesus is looking forward to the Cross, it leaves something to be desired. Yes, the weight and guilt of our sin required a blood sacrifice. No, the blood of animals was not sufficient to fully cover all of our sin for all time. Hebrews 9.13-14 makes this point.

But, all of us are born to die. That is the curse of sin. Romans 5 says that as sin entered the world through one man, so did death (v. 12). To leave the statement at “Jesus as born to die” misses something crucial: He did not stay dead!

The statement of the angel in Luke 24 are some of the most beautifully uttered words in all of Scripture: He is not here, but He has risen (v. 6).

I do not have any way of knowing what the Mary’s or Peter and John felt when they saw that empty tomb on that first Resurrection Day. But, I do know what it is like to know that Christ is risen. He didn’t come to die, He came to conquer death! He didn’t come to die, He came to rise again. He didn’t come to die, He came to offer us His resurrection!

Just as He said, He lives again. Join me in the celebration of heaven that sin is conquered, death is conquered, and salvation is secure. Join me in the call that Matt Maher echoes in the hymn on the previous page: Come and rise up from the grave! Because Jesus rose again, we can transcend the grave today.

I pray that this week as you have journeyed with me in prayer, song, and in Scripture to this point that you will see the beauty of the resurrection again. As you prepare to worship with us at FBC Fairburn, I pray that the power of the resurrection will erupt into a new song of joy for you today!

Pray: Lord Jesus, the tomb is empty because You are the true Savior. I thank You again for giving me life. I praise You today because of what You did for me. I sing for the joy that You have laid before me in everlasting life. Holy are You, Lord! You are the King!
