Journey to the Empty Tomb

March 2019

I want to thank you for taking this journey with me towards the Resurrection. This is the week where we pause to take special remembrance of the Promise that God made to save us and reflect on the sacrifice that made it possible. Quite honestly, Resurrection Sunday is my favorite day of the church year. This is what it is all about!

A few years ago, Christi and I determined that we would best teach our children about Christ and Christmas by doing Advent readings each night in December and couple those readings with family oriented activities to prepare us for the celebration of His birth. About three years ago, she approached me about doing a similar thing for the week leading up to our Resurrection celebration. It is easy to confuse meaning of these special days when much of what we do in preparation is geared more towards the periphery (Santa, presents, eggs, and bunnies…respectively) and not on the target, which is Christ.

What you are holding is an attempt to bring this preparation to your hearts as we prepare to celebrate the resurrection of Christ together as a church. In future editions, there may appear activity suggestions for your families. For this year, perhaps each family could consider events or activities to do together. In either case, I ask that you take each day and seek the face of God and rejoice in His gift of salvation as a family. Read and pray alone and then together however your schedules allow.

Each day you will see the lyrics of a song, some are hymns and some are not. They provide an opportunity for you to worship in song and in reflection as you take time to consider the topic of the day. You will also have a passage of Scripture that journeys through the Jerusalem week, where Jesus was ultimately crucified. The devotional writing is geared to pull you into the week both as a reader and as a follower of Christ. Please allow the Holy Spirit to use His Word and the devotional words to prepare you heart for worship this week. Each day concludes with a prayer of commitment and reflection.

I am praying for you as you prepare for Resurrection Sunday. Bring others into this journey with you. I love you and I will see you Sunday as we worship the Risen King!
