Finished! Friday, April 10, 2020
“Therefore, when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.” John 10.30, NASB
When Jesus said “It is finished”, He wasn’t speaking of His life, nor was He speaking about the crucifixion process. He was speaking about redemption! Jesus cried out to God in this moment. He didn’t cry out to the soldiers. He didn’t cry out to the onlookers. He didn’t even cry out to John, the beloved disciple who was standing with Mary.
The great thing about the word “tetelestai” is found in its original form. He could have used the word “telestai”, which also means “paid in full”. The use of the form “tetelestai” adds a little emphasis. It would be like paying off your credit card, but then buying a TV at Walmart. Yes, the bill was paid in full, but now there is another charge on the account. What Jesus said is “I have paid this in full and it will remain paid in full for all time.”
Your sin is covered. You can rejoice with David who saw the redemption of the Messiah when he wrote, “How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity” (Psalm 34.1-2, NASB).
Pray: Jesus, You paid my debt! Because of You, my sin does not stick to my account. You paid for all of my sin: past, present, and future. What an amazing love! Show me how to live for You today and show others how great Your love for them truly is!
