“Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you seeking?”
John 20.15, NASB

Up to this point, we have looked at the words that Jesus spoke on the cross. Each of these seven statements have given us some insight into the heart and mind of Jesus as He paid our ransom. Today, we look at the first words after the resurrection.
We can easily breeze by the statement and focus on the glorious resurrection. That is beautiful, by the way! However, I want us to stop and ponder these words because I think we can easily find ourselves needing to hear what Jesus is asking.
Mary knew Jesus well. Many believe she may be the adulterous woman of John 8 or the woman who washed the feet of Jesus with perfume, tears, and hair in Luke 7. What we do now for certain is that she had a deep love and admiration for Jesus because He offered what no one else could: hope. She had watched the crucifixion and the burial. She knew the details of His life. She would have been a good Baptist!
That is where the danger lies; knowing the details but not knowing who we are seeking. Jesus comes to this woman and asks the simple question: are you looking for a body or are you looking for the Savior?
On Resurrection Day, who are you seeking?

  • Are you seeking the feel good story of an empty tomb or are you seeking the One who broke the curse of death?
  • Are you seeking the tradition of Easter Sunday or are you seeking the One Who broke tradition in order to usher in the Kingdom of God?
  • Are you seeking a ruler to change the systems of the earth like the Jews in Jesus’ day or the King of Kings Who has a different and better kingdom that will never be shaken?
  • Are you seeking the hope of all mankind?
  • Are you seeking the salvation of the nations?
  • Are you seeking the peace of God?

We serve a triumphant King who has offered us much more than tradition and much more than religion. When Christ Jesus rose from the grave, He changed what we were looking for. He raise the bar to the heights of heaven, for He alone could deliver it!
Pray: Jesus, today I only want to see You. The things of the world will pass away and disappoint, but You have overcome death. Your kingdom will never pass away. Help me to see what You have made available to me now. I praise You that my life can demonstrate the power of eternity to those around me.
